The specific AI tool you use today might be obsolete in two years. The prompting techniques that work now might be replaced by more advanced methods.

Don't get too attached to any single tool. Instead, focus on the fundamental skill: learning how to learn. Stay curious, try new tools when they emerge, and be willing to adapt your workflow. The constant in this new world is change.

2. Double Down on Engineering Fundamentals​

As AI handles more of the low-level code implementation, the core principles of software engineering become more valuable, not less.

  • System Design and Architecture: An AI can write a function, but you need to tell it where that function fits into the larger system.
  • Clean Code and Maintainability: You are the editor and curator of the AI's output. Your judgment on what makes code readable and maintainable is more critical than ever.

3. Move Up the Value Chain​

AI commoditizes the act of writing simple, boilerplate code. Your value as a developer will increasingly come from your ability to operate at a higher level of abstraction.

Instead of spending your day writing loops and getters, you can focus on:
